1st Unit: Force & Motion
Question: Two people are each pulling on opposite ends of a rope. If they are pulling on the rope with equal but opposite forces, what will happen to the rope?
During the unit students will determine the motion of objects, the factors that affect motion, energy needed to make machines move, and the use of simple machines to solve problems. The vocabulary we will investigate includes: force, inertia, friction, speed, velocity, acceleration, balanced forces, action, reaction, simple machine, lever, fulcrum, gravity and weight.

2nd Unit: Matter-Properties & Change
During this unit students will learn that the sun provides the energy
that is a driving force for most biotic and abiotic cycles on the surface of the earth. Students will also learn that the sun’s energy fuels the water cycle and impacts different aspects of the water cycle (evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation).
Students will know that the weight of an object is equal to the weight of the sum of its parts. This is true in all closed systems.
Students will also know that by making qualitative and quantitative data
records, we are able to create before/after representations of materials (and their properties), so that we can compare before/after versions of materials.

3rd Unit: Energy-Conservation &Transfer
At the end of this unit, students will be able to:
Explain the effects of the transfer of heat (either by direct contact or at a distance) that occurs between objects at different temperatures.(conduction, convection or radiation).
Explain how heating and cooling affect some materials and how this relates to their purpose and practical applications.

5th Unit: Ecosystems
This unit covers information about the commonalities and differences in ecosystems. Students will learn about producers, consumers, the role of light, temperature, and soil composition in the ecosystem, the interaction between the ecosystem and in it's organisms, humans effects on ecosystems, and nature's recycling program.
Some of the vocabulary includes; ecosystem, population, community, ecology, habitat, abiotic factor, niche, food chain, food web, herbivore, carnivore, predator, prey, scavenger, evaporation, biome, grassland, tundra, desert, taiga, deciduous forest, tropical rain forest, precipitation, and condensation.
